Independent Doesn’t Mean Alone

Choosing your own direction should not mean figuring out every next step by yourself.

I have spent enough time in this industry to know that independence can sound better than it feels.

An agent may have the freedom to choose their products, serve clients in their own way, and build a professional identity that actually fits. But freedom can also come with a blank page—and nobody to call when the next question feels too big.

I don’t believe those things have to come together.

“Independent doesn’t mean alone.”

Independence Has More Than One Meaning

Independence means choosing your own direction.

Maybe you want to represent health insurance products and remain a solo producer. Maybe you want to build a business around your own name. Maybe you want to create an agency and lead a team.

There is no single right shape for a career.

Building a Team Means Building a Business

I also want to be honest about agency ownership.

Building an agency does not mean you stop selling. You still have to serve clients, generate revenue, and keep money coming in. At the same time, you have to recruit, train, lead, and create systems people can rely on.

That means an agency owner is balancing two jobs:

Production
Serving clients and generating revenue.
Construction
Recruiting people, developing leaders, and building the foundation.

Both matter.

If you try to build a team before you have product focus, a sales rhythm, or a financial foundation, you are asking that team to stand on something that does not exist yet.

That is not a character flaw.
It is a structure problem.

Structure matters because it shows respect for the people who trust you. If your team cannot see where they are going, they will eventually look for direction somewhere else.

A Mentor and a Roadmap

At Black Sheep, agents who want to build their own agency get two things: a mentor—the person—and a roadmap—the structure.

The roadmap is still being created. I am not pretending every piece is finished or that one system will work perfectly for everyone.

What I am creating is a collection of plug-and-play resources agents can make their own. Take what you need. Leave what you don’t. Adapt it to the business you are actually trying to build.

The goal is to give you a place to start thinking and building with intention, without forcing you to begin from a blank page.

I know the road because I have been on it. I know where the decisions get complicated. I know how easy it is to confuse motion with progress.

A mentor can help you think through the next step. A roadmap can help you see the steps after that.

“The mentor is the person. The roadmap is the structure.”

What Winning Looks Like

A year from now, winning may not look like a headline or an impressive title.

It may look like paying your bills without panic.
Taking the vacation you kept postponing.
Living the life you actually wanted when you entered this business.

It should also look like being able to ask questions without worrying that they are offensive, inconvenient, or too much.

Field work can be lonely. Independence shouldn’t be.

You need people with good ideas to bounce things off. People who will tell you the truth without making you feel small. A community that understands the difference between needing help and lacking ambition.

That is the kind of environment I am building at Black Sheep.

Not a place where everyone has to follow the same script. A place where agents can develop their own voice, choose their own direction, and still have somewhere to turn when the work gets heavy.

What I’m Building

I am building support for agents who want more than a contract.

More than a logo.
More than a list of carriers and a login.

I want agents to have practical structure, honest mentorship, and a community where they can keep learning. I want them to build something sustainable enough to support their lives—not just their next sales week.

The work is still in progress. So am I.

But the direction is clear: help independent agents think better, build thoughtfully, and create a career that gives them room to breathe.

If you are building your own path in health insurance—or thinking about building an agency of your own—I hope you find people who support your independence without leaving you to figure out everything alone.

That is what I am working toward at Black Sheep Insurance Benefits Group.

“Support your independence. Never leave you stranded in it.”

Join the herd. Or build your own.
